On The Study Of The Streets And Lanes' Names In Xi'an Old City In History

This paper is a comprehensive study about the streets and lanes' names in Xi' an old city in history.The first chapter is about the development course of streets and lanes' names in Xi' an old city in history. The ideology of plan which is the basis of city construction can be traced back to Zhou Dynasty. Then , the development course of streets and lanes' names experiences four stages: Chang' an city in Sui and Tang Dynasties, Han Jian new small city from WuDai Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty, Xi' an city wall in Ming and Qing dynasties, Xi' an old city since 1911. This paper also analyzes the features in each stage, and explores their relations and changes.The second chapter analyzes the features of the streets names. That is, stability and the spirit of the times. The streets names can be summed up 12 denominations, such as city's structures, the feudal officials, warehouses, Inn and military institutions, the educational institutions, the temple, the concept of religion and belief factors, the commercial and the handicraft industry, socio-economic factors, immigrants factors and so on . It summed up the evolution of the law of the names, and analysed of the reasons for its evolution.The third chapter further explores the cultural meaning of the streets and lanes' names in Xi' an old city in history ,which is mainly from the seven areas of: embodying traditional clan concept of folk beliefs and religion, expression Commissioner of education and culture, military activities, the industrial and commercial sectors of cultural psychology, the changing circumstances of the historical geography.
