| The study of the translation of children's literature requires an adequate understanding of children and children's literature. Most adults believe children and children's literature are simple and easy to understand. As a matter of fact, the translation of children's literature is as difficult as, or even more difficult than that of adults'. One of the difficulties lies in the age gap between the adult translator and the children reader. The translator has to make adjustment in this gap and find balance to meet reader's need, to fulfill translation purpose and finish translation task.Compared with adult literature, the status of children's literature is always on the margin of literature research, a status being neglected. Nowadays the fast development of communication technology and globalization quicken the pace of introducing foreign works and enable children all over the world to share works of different cultures, and translation's function and meaning are getting more important in this process of cultural communication. However, translation research is still peripheral in the whole multi-cultural system. As a result, the translation of children's literature is undoubtedly on the margin of the margin. Its related theories and research are still far from being adequately explored yet, and at present there are only a few people in China dedicating research to this field.Based on the previous experts'and scholars'research, this thesis borrows the viewpoint of translator's voice, which is brought up by Hermans, and combines it with narratology. O'Sullivan has built up a communicative model of the translated narrative text based on Chatman's narrative communication model, and this thesis will adopt O'Sullivan's model to make a text analysis from the perspectives of translator and translation purpose. The analysis will discuss translator's strategy and methods when dealing with his/her voice in the translated text for the target children reader so as to fulfill the translation purpose in the practice of translation of children's literature. The consequent effect, result and the fulfillment of the translation purpose will also be discussed. The analysis and discussion are aiming at some suggestions for the practice of translation of children's literature.This thesis chooses Jean Webster's famous work Daddy-Long-Legs and its two Chinese versions to make a comparative analysis. The research methods to be applied in this thesis are basically descriptive with text examples. Through the analysis, different translator's voice will be tracked out. The aim of the analysis and discussion is to reflect the current trend of translating for children, and to make some adequate suggestions for the present translation practice of children's literature. The expectation of this thesis is to provide some helpful suggestions for those who work in the translation of children's literature, and to offer some effective guidelines for its future development. |
