On Zhang Guruo's Translation Of David Copperfield-From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

The traditional translation studies are based upon linguistic theory; in other words, translation theorists attach more importance to the issue of "equivalence". Whereas in the eyes of skopos theorists, translation is "to produce a text in a target setting for a target purpose and target addressees in target circumstances". Skopostheorie is the nucleus of functionalism with the representatives of Reiss, Vermeer and Nord, etc. With the groundwork of Skopostheorie, this thesis analyzes the Chinese version of David Copperfield translated by Zhang Guruo from the skopos rule and loyalty rule with the descriptive method, explores the potential factors that influence Zhang to make the choice of retranslation of this work, illuminates the tactics he adopted to meet the target readers' cognitive habits and requirements and how he reproduces the ST to be loyal to the original author, his thoughts and writing styles. The research of Zhang's translation from functionalism will thoroughly break the fetters of the traditional translation dichotomy which centers on such issues as literal vs. liberal translation or domestication vs. foreignization, so that the literary translation works can be re-evaluated: whether they satisfy the prospective function; thus it has directive function toward the translation practice. The thesis consists of five parts besides the introduction and conclusion:Part One is the introduction of Skopostheorie and the topic of the paper.Part Two is a literature review of domestic status quo of the researches concerning Zhang's translation of David Copperfield.Part Three is the theoretical framework of the thesis with a brief survey of the basic views of Skopostheorie and some points of its application in E-C literary translation.Part Four is a terse introduction of Charles Dickens and the special position of David Copperfield in all of his works and the abundant Chinese versions.Part Five is a combing of Zhang Guruo's life experiences and his views of translation.Part Six is a detailed systematic analysis of Zhang's translation of David Copperfield from skopos rule and loyalty rule.Part Seven is the conclusion.
