Grammar teaching has always been a hot issue in foreign language teaching and research. Since 1970s, grammar teaching was once ignored in foreign and second language teaching communities. The necessity of grammar teaching was realized and recognized recently once again since an increasing number of studies show that grammar teaching could facilitate the students' accurate grasp of the form of the target language in foreign and second language teaching. Meanwhile, the teaching effects of the application of pure Communicative Language Teaching Approach (CLT) to foreign and second language teaching, which ignores grammar teaching, is not satisfactory.On the basis of the survey of the researches concerning the explicit grammar teaching both at home and abroad as well as the analysis of China's specific conditions of English teaching and learning, the thesis holds that the evolution of English grammar teaching from the perspective of the weak version of CLT which allows for explicit grammar teaching is more flexible in China. This thesis puts forward and discusses the four principles and the procedure of seven steps for the evolution of English grammar teaching from the perspective of CLT. Meanwhile, the thesis shows how these principles and the procedure of the evolution of English grammar teaching could be applied to the grammar teaching of the attributive clause, the passive voice, the object clause, the parallelism, the comparative form, the simple present tense and "If Clauses" in the subjunctive mood. Furthermore, in combination with my reflection on the application of the principles and the procedure mentioned above, the thesis discusses how to deal with the problems that might occur at the operation level of the evolution of English grammar teaching from the perspective of CLT.By discussing the principles and the procedure of the evolution of English grammar teaching from the perspective of CLT at the theoretical level and by not only demonstrating but also reflecting on the actualization of the principles and the procedure in specific teaching conditions, the thesis is to offer some references for foreign language teaching researchers for further explorations in improving English grammar teaching in China and to offer English teachers theoretical knowledge and practical models of how to carry out the evolution of English grammar teaching from the perspective of CLT in their own teaching contexts and how to solve those problems that might occur at the operation level effectively.
