The Dual Labyrinth Of City And Language

Based on the poetry of 1930s' Les contemporains for study,the present dissertation inspects this period of poetry writing from the following two perspectives:"city" and "language",in an attempt to make a theoretical thinking and answer some complex poetic problems,such as the relationship between experience world,language symbol and poetry form.The dissertation is divided into four parts to make a concrete study.Chapter 1 "the poetry of Les contemporains in the city context",first of all reveals the importance of urban survival background,which exists not only as material space but also demonstrates a new way of life and a new cultural landscape,providing cohesive and emissive field of modern experience.In this new context of survival,Les contemporains puts forward the poetic proposition of using modern poetry form to write modern mood. The poetry writing of Les contemporains is subject to the urban context,even the "local imagination" is under the city vision.The observational way of poets changes from a far, overlook and romantic view,which results from May 4th period,to a near,equal and daily one.Chapterâ…¡"the poetry of Les contemporains in the language chain",from the perspective of "modern rhetoric" and "modern form",reviews the status of the poetry of Les contemporains in the development of modern Chinese poetry,as well as the literary language form and poetic expression strategy at the crossroads of the classical culture tradition and modern Western literary resource.The poetry writing of Les contemporains gives priority to free verse and consciously promotes the Imagist poetry style.The poetry writing of Les contemporains is deeply influenced by Western city discourse,but the language symbol has its own cultural memory.When Les contemporains responds to the Western,it also responds to the tradition.Chapterâ…¢,"city image in the poetry of Les contemporains",discusses the urban landscape,the self-imagination of the poet,new feeling and new writing technique presented in the text.The presentation of Les contemporains tends to "real".The emotion of poet has dual nature of devotion and alienation,the latter of which especially reflected in the self-imagination of "lonely travelers".In the nature of poetry,the poetry of Les contemporains jumps out of the path of realism and reasoning,and attaches importance to feeling and imagination.Its character tends to acuity,precise,subtle,using smart metaphor to restrain emotion,and its frame tends to discontinuous.Chapterâ…£"dual labyrinth:continue in the introspection",sums up and reflects the poetry writing of Les contemporains.Although the Les contemporains harvests a lot of fine texts,but the whole is far from mature stage.That how to deal with the relation of modern experience,language symbol and poetry form has not been effectively answered. First,it is how to deal with the difference and relation between Chinese classical poetry tradition and Western modern poetry.Only realizing the difference as well as relation between both the tow sides,a poet can write poetry which is not only conform to Chinese's aesthetic interest but also go deep into the modern feeling world.Secondly,it is how to deal with the issue of freedom and order.Les contemporains ignores the construction of form and order when consciously advocating free verse.However,from the experience world to language symbol,and to the poetry form,is an art process during which experience finds symbol,and form names the language.City and language,like two overlapping labyrinth,only outstanding poetry texts can provide the imaginary export.
