Many a scholars is concerned with the study of affective questions. The term "affective" is still used to imply an even wider range. This thesis aims to research the affective factors of Tibetan students in Colleges and Universities for Nationalities. Practical investigation has been made in Northwest University for Nationalities. What's more, further exploration and analysis have been done in order to put forward the author's personal ideas and suggestions.In English language teaching, the term "affective" is used to imply learner's soul experience—feelings, perception, moods, and preferences. Generally speaking, the affective factors can be classified into two categories. One is called individual factors which concern with the learner's attitude, anxiety, inhibition, motivation, etc. The other refers to the interactive ones. They are the psychological influences such as empathy, classroom transactions, cross-cultural processes, etc, which occur in the course of interaction among the learners or between the learners and teachers. The thesis focuses on Tibetan students' motivation, attitude, anxiety, empathy and cross-cultural awareness in their English learning.The research is innovative because there are only a few studies about affective factors and English language learning of minority students in China. Therefore, the thesis starts an initial research on Chinese Ethnic Foreign Language Education and theoretical exploration of the Foreign Language Teaching and Ethnic Education on the basis of the theories of English Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Educational Psychology and Sociology.The main methods of this research are field investigation, document research, empirical study and theoretical analysis, which are subjective and scientific. The object of the investigation is some Tibetan students who are studying in Northwestern University for Nationalities. Through class observation, collection of related material questionnaire, interview, discussion and subjective and scientific first-hand materials to have been obtained, SPSS statistics software is used to analyze the data. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are employed in the study.This thesis is composed of 6 chapters: Chapter one: introduction to background information, purpose and significance of the study, and the key research questions;Chapter two: interview studies on the present researches of affective factors in English learning on the basis of the theories of English Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Educational Psychology and Sociology;Chapter three: the theoretical framework of the research, including motivation, attitude, anxiety, empathy and cross-cultural awareness in their English learning;Chapter four: study methodology, mainly including subjects, hypotheses, instruments, experimental procedure and the data collection;Chapter five: analysis of the collected data and a discussion on the major findings of this study;Chapter six: the major findings of the present research, implications, limitations as well as suggestions for further study.
