| In recent years, teaching writing has been drawn great attention from the teachers and researchers. Especially after china's entering into the WTO, people begin to realize the importance of writing in human communication and research in teaching writing has made much progress. Series of approaches and theories have been issued in the western countries, such as product approach, process-based approach, genre approach etc. In 2000, two researchers:R. Badger &G. White ( 2000), put forward a comprehensive pattern-process genre approach. In this dissertation, the writer contrasts the practical effectiveness of process-genre approach and product approach in improving university students' English writing proficiency through experimental research. The study is to solve three questions:1. Do process genre approach and product approach contribute to the improvement of English writing proficiency?2. Is process genre approach more effective than product approach in improving university students'abilities in organizing a writing of different genres and using various language structures?3. Is process genre approach is better than product approach to develop students' overall writing abilities?This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction. It introduces research approach and how the thesis is organized and points out significance of the study. Chapter Two is a review of relevant literature of different writing approaches and genre approach theory as well as the implementation of process genre approach in university writing class. Chapter Three is the empirical study. There are four parts in the experiment: two tests, two questionnaires and an interview and the teaching experiment. Then the result of the study is discussed. Chapter Four concludes the findings and limitations of the research as well as some pedagogical implications. Chapter Five is conclusion.The result shows that both genre approach and product approach contribute to the improvement of English writing proficiency. Process genre approach is indeed more effective than product approach in improving university students'abilities in organizing a writing of different genres and using various language structures right. In addition, process genre approach is better than product approach to develop students' overall writing abilities. |
