Cultural exchanges bring about the contact of languages, carriers of culture. The significances of language contact are many, one of them being language borrowing. Loanwords, the most common and dominating type of language borrowing, have aroused more and more interest of scholars in linguistics, translation and even those in sociology and psychology. Nowadays with the more frequent contact and exchanges between China and other countries, many new things have been introduced to China, which leads to the large-scale influx of loanwords. Therefore, the study of loanwords translation has become a pressing task, which is of great significance theoretically and practically. In theory, it is an integral part of translation studies and lexicology and it also sheds light on the study of sociology and psychology. In practice, the study can deepen the understanding of loanwords, which in turn helps improve the translation of loanwords.However, the traditional study has focused more on the collection and classification of loanwords. Little attention has been paid to the exploration of causes of different loanwords. Based on the research at home and abroad, this thesis does a quantitative review of features of English-originated loanwords in modern Chinese and goes further to dig the linguistic and extra-linguistic causes of such characteristics. Also this work carries out a tentative study on the principle applicable to loanwords translation from English into Chinese. From the perspective of functional equivalence, the author believes it is vital to bridge the phonetic, morphemic and cultural gaps between English and Chinese. At the end of this paper, corresponding strategies are proposed in order to achieve"functional equivalence"in loanwords translation from English into Chinese.
