A Comparative Study On The English Translation Of The Official Titles In San Guo Yan Yi Of Roberts' And Taylor's Versions

Official titles exist in every country.This thesis studies the English translation of official titles in San Guo Yan Yi with the aid of the self-built Chinese-English parallel corppra,which are composed of original Chinese version and C.H.Brewitt-Taylor's and Moss Roberts' English versions of San Guo Yan Yi.The author of this thesis endeavors to give comprehensive descriptions,and to make comparison and analysis by adopting the quantitative and qualitative methods. The author establishes two parallel corpora containing the original text and its two corresponding English versions and aligns the corpora at paragraph level.The author will compare and contrast the statistical data with the parameters drawn from the original text to ensure the objectivity and reliability of the materials for research and conclusions.The thesis has obtained the following major findings:(1) There is difference either in type or number of the official titles in Roberts' and Taylor's versions.(2) Roberts and Taylor prefer the combination of communicative and semantic translation approach to translate the official titles.(3) The translation trend of Roberts and Taylor is the target reader-oriented.
