A Study On Translator's Subjectivity In English Versions Of Liaozhaizhiyi Under The Perspective Of George Steiner's Hermeneutic Motion

This thesis analyzes the translation differences caused by different translators'subjectivity by taking George Steiner's hermeneutic motion as the theoretical basis and three English versions of Liaozhaizhiyi as the study cases. The writer wants to prove that the translator's subjectivity penetrates the whole process of translation activity and greatly influences the translation effect.The combination of Hermeneutics which is the western philosophy of understanding and interpretation and translation creates a new domain of translation studies and brings many new perspectives of translation studies. The translator's subjectivity is emphasized in the whole four steps according to Steiner: trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation. The study cases in this thesis are three English versions of Pu Songling's Liaozhaizhiyi which gets great reputation by its profound subjects and unique writing skills and even as a novel it has the most translated versions in China.In this thesis, the writer mainly introduces the three major English versions by Giles, Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, Denis C and Victor H. Mair and uses Steiner's fourfold translation theory to analyze different translation effects caused by translators'different culture backgrounds, personal experiences and other subjective matters. Based on those researches, the thesis proves that translator's subjectivity displays fully in the translation activity and also the research of this thesis may offer some new references for studying English versions of Liaozhaizhiyi.
