Objective:To investigate the mental health of the freshmen and graduates of college and postgraduates in universities of Shanxi Province. To understand their general psychological health level, main psychological problems, basic character traits and the relationship between character and general psychological health level. To provide evidence for university and college in our province, which taking corresponding measures to improve psychological health level of college students and postgraduates.Methods:According to stratified and cluster sampling principle, 1915 college freshmen and graduates, 1502 postgraduate freshmen and graduates in 5 universities of Shanxi Province were investigated by"Symptom Checklist 90"(SCL-90) and"Eysenck personality questionnaire"(EPQ). All the data are managed by SPSS 13.0 software t-test, chi-square test, variance analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression were applied for data statistics.Results:1. The fresh college students and graduates in Shanxi Province have higher scores of the positive subscales and the means of all scales and other scales in SCL-90 than the norm of the national adults, except that there is no significantly difference in interpersonal sensitivity between graduates and the norm of the national adults, the rate of psychological disorder is 13.89% in them .The fresh students have higher scores of the obsessive and interpersonal subscales than the graduates (P<0.05), boys have higher scores of the coercion and hostility and psychiatrics subscales than girls in fresh college students, and boys have higher scores of all subscales than girls in graduates (P<0.01~0.05), there is significantly difference in some subscales in various kind of college (P<0.01~0.05).2. Boys have higher scores of the N and P subscales (P<0.01) and lower scores of the E subscales than girls in fresh students and graduates (P<0.05). The students in medical college have higher scores in E subscales than the ones in other colleges and the students in agricultural college have higher scores in P subscales than the ones in other colleges.3. The fresh postgraduates in Shanxi Province have higher scores of the coercion, depression, anxiety, phobia, paranoid and psychiatrics subscales and the means of all scales and P subscales in SCL-90 than the norm of the national adults (P<0.01), the graduates have higher scores of the anxiety, phobia, psychiatrics subscales and P subscales than the norm of the national adults (P<0.01), and both them have lower scores of interpersonal sensitivity than the norm of the national adults, the rate of psychological disorder is 9.58% in them. There is no significantly difference in the P subscales and individual subscales and the means of all scales between postgraduates and graduates (P>0.05), boys have higher scores of the psychiatrics and paranoid scales than girls in new graduate students (P<0.05), boys have higher scores of the coercion, depression, psychiatrics and paranoid scales than girls in graduates (P<0.01~0.05), there is no significantly difference in all subscales in various kind of college (P<0.01~0.05). 4. Boys have higher scores of the P subscales than girls in new graduate students and graduates (P<0.01), and lower scores of the E subscales than girls (P<0.05). The medical universities have higher scores of the E subscales than other universities, and agricultural universities have higher scores of the P and N subscales than other universities.5. The total scores of SCL-90 and scores of every factor in college students and graduate students in Shanxi Province tend to lower with increasing education level, the main common psychological problems of whom are coercion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression and hostility.6. Students with psychological problems have higher scores of the N and P subscales than students without psychological problems (P<0.01), and lower scores of the E subscales than latter (P<0.01). There are highest correlation coefficient between N subscales and every factor of SCL-90, and they are significantly positive correlation (P<0.01). There is significantly positive correlation between P subscales and factors in addition to coercion and interpersonal factors (P<0.01). There are significantly negative correlation between N subscales and factors, such as coercion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression and terror factors (P<0.01). The N, E and P subscales all have significant impact on emergence of the psychological problems.Conclusion:The general psychological health level of college students and postgraduate of Shanxi Province are poor (compared to national adult norm). Their common and important psychological problems were obsessive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression and hostility; psychological health level in different grade students had the tendency to reduce with improving degree of culture; psychological health of the male students inferior to female students; psychological problems of agricultural university students were most seriously on the whole; psychological health level of medical university students were relatively superior. Student has personality tendency of neuroticism, mentation and introversion are easy to occur psychological problems.
