The relations of Franco-german during the Seventies and Eighties of the 20th century had mainly gone through the three stages: the Pompidou-Brandt Period from 1969 to 1974,the d'Estaing-Schmidt Period from 1974 to 1981 and the Mitterrand-Kohl Period from 1981 to 1989.Since France and German become reconciled during the Fifties and Sixties, both of the two countries had tended towards the closer cooperation in phase for the change of the international situation and the demand of the national politics, economy, military defence affairs, etc. After the intergrade from the end of the Sixties to the beginning of the Seventies, both of France and German had achieved wearing-down and understanding, and managed together to the object of seeking cooperation inside the European Community and advancing the politics-economy alliance of Europe. Inside the European Community, the steps of cooperation in the politics and economic existed in the whole Seventies. From the middle period of the Seventies to the beginning of the Eighties, based on the new change of the international political and economic situation and the adjustment on the diplomatic policies, Axis of Franco-german had been strengthened and the cooperation had moved towards an unprecedented peak.In the Eighties, The two countries had returned to the Axis of Franco-german after a transient estrangement. They strengthened the bilateral cooperation. What was more noticeable , they got a breakthrough in the domain of the bilateral cooperation in defence. The relation of Franco-german during the Pompidou-Brandt Period from 1969 to 1974 showed a characteristic of slack. Though there had been a material progress in the cooperation between the two countries, France had shown its anxiety and misgiving. On the policies about Europe, France intentionally adopted the strategy of "allied with England to restrict German" to contain BRD. The monetary crisis had aggravated their divarication. Then the leaders of the two countries adjusted the bilateral relations during the d'Estaing-Schmidt Period from 1974 to 1981. The both sides were more close in the policies of economy and currencies, and advanced the European Community's cause. At the same time, the consanguinity came into being because they went close for the policies to America and made the Axis of Franco-german return. The new change that the Cold War showed the trend of more relaxation appeared in the international situation during the Mitterrand-Kohl Period from 1981 to 1989. France and German appeared on the international stage with a closer stance after a transient estrangement. The European defending cooperation was brought up into the schedule. The both sides didn't only obtained the great breakthrough in the domain of defending cooperation but also advanced the omni-directional development of the European Community together in many aspects such as economy and science. Having made the new evolvement in the relation during this period, the Axis of Franco-german entered the ripe phase and came into being the "alliance in the alliance" in a certain meaning.
