David Herbert Lawrence and Yu Dafu, two famous prolific writers, are generally considered as the influential modern novelists. They are of great talent while arouse great controversy in the history of modern English literature and Chinese literature respectively. The novels of Lawrence have brought him international prestige, especially one of his saga novels—Sons and Lovers is generally regarded as his chief masterpiece. Yu Dafu was the representative of the May Fourth literature. This thesis will combine their famous novel Sons and Lovers and Sinking with their life experiences, effects of society on them, and discussion of their worldviews. It is of great significance to make a comparison between their similar life experiences, creative techniques, presentation subjects and literature destiny.This paper focuses on the subjects of life experiences in their novels to conduct a comparative analysis of the different cultural connotations, which seem to be similar while implies striking contrast, reflecting the similarity and difference between their works. The two autobiographical works were closely related with life, which laid the foundation for the novels. As for content, the two writers adopted the unusual approaches to express their imagined emotion. The difference of the description of sexual love is that Lawrence fought against social rationality, while Yu Dafu fought against the traditional ethics.Comparative Literature is actually the science which studies the relationship of the works between different countries and nations. This paper lists the reasons for making the comparison between the two and then makes an analysis on the basis of their daily life (including life experiences, love and work), personality and the social background. Furthermore, it makes the corresponding comparison between their masterpieces—Sons and Lovers, Sinking by studying their similarities and differences with the aim to find the specific features from the common features. The reflection of the social reality in their works can be further understood.
