Edward Yang's film has played a very important role in film history of Taiwan, even in the history of China. However, in the past, scholars from mainland of China, although explore a lot about his films, mainly focus on the film director or a specific film. According to statistics, there are 20 articles about Edward Yang's films in China 's journals, but only one discussed from the perspective of screenwriting and this paper only talks about several aspects. As for the study about Yangs' film in Taiwan , the situation is similar to that of mainland. Screenwriting is the basis of film and it influences a lot .Therefore, this research is of great importance and is helpful to the development of Chinese films in the long run.This article fully studies on Yang 's films from the perspective of screenwriting on the basis of its meaning, implication and position. In terms of research methods, that is to put yang 's films in an environment of society, economy, history and culture to find the position, value and significance of his films in the progress of film development in Taiwan. Hence, in this progress, just like what the title, introduction and ending suggests , the author combines yang's films with the creation and development of"new film"of Taiwan and compare yang with former film producers and those of his time .This paper is mainly focus on the characteristic of yang's screenwriting. The part of introduction discusses the rise of Taiwan's"new films"movement and the relationship between its artistic characteristic and yang's films. It also points out that as an important symbol of"new films"movement, the artistic style of yang's production can be regarded as a powerful illustration of"new films". Meanwhile , the introduction part puts forward a question, that is, whether his films share these common characteristics and still keep its unique traits.According to the basic elements of screenwriting, the body part of this paper is divided into 6 chapters to analyze yang's films . The first chapter is about themes of yang's films, which often related to relationship between cities and people. The second chapter talks about person . Yang has a talent in fostering people with unique characteristics. The third chapter is about time and environment. The fourth chapter is about structure and recount, his films is full of details which come from real life. The fifth chapter discusses the relationship between use of actor's lines , sound and picture. The last chapter is about his style, which is considered to inherit and advance the realism.The end of this paper focus on one point : how should we look at"new films"movement which is demonstrated by Edward Yang's film and Hou. On the one hand, we must acknowledge the achievements and influences of"new film"movement. we can say that yang contribute a lot in"new film"movement ,which gains attention and acknowledgement from international moviedom and many of his works win international awards.。On the other hand, we must fully consider the relationship between"new film"and audiences. The reason why"new film"declined later is that it only stresses art and thoughts , but ignore the needs of audiences . This phenomenon told us that film industry must expand to a certain degree so as to keep its sustainable development and existence. However, if you want to expand it , you must first produce those ones audiences enjoy to watch. Last but not least, although Edward Yang 's film did not produce many films , he himself and his works contributed a lot for the Taiwan film industry.
