This thesis studies the literary activities about traditional and popular Chinese on the part of Lin Shu with the stylistics as the theoretical basis from the perspective of the nothion of style. As one of the most important concepts in modern linguistics, "Style" is of great guiding significance to literature study. In particular, it usually exerted a far-reaching impact on the writers as well as their works at the social transformational period. As one of the most controversial literary figure during the late QIng dynasty and contemporary period, Lin Shu has always been criticized for his conservative cultural and literary standpoint. Meanwhile, however, his earlly works written in popular Chinese and his translated works of the western novels in traditional Chinese have all achieved great success. But, such a phenomenon hasn't been corordinated and mediated in the present account of literary history. With "popular Chinese"and"traditional Chinese" as two parallel path, the second chapter presents a detailed and orderly introduction about Lin Shu's literary activities and incorporated them into the practice of Lin Shu's notion of style. In this chapter, a description of Lin Shu's notion of style is also given though the analysis of these literary practice. The Chapter three will try to explore the form of Lin Shu's notion of style in different facets, including his education experience, intercourse situation and the historical origin of his literature theory.
