The period of Wei-Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties is the culmination of ancient Chinese calligraphy. Although it is the most chaotic in politics, the most painful in society, it is actually an extremely free time in ideology as well as the richest artistic time in spirit.In the end of Eastern Han Dynasty, the convulsion of political situation and the misery of society provided for the birth and development of metaphysics. The period of Han Dynasty' s 'Confucian teaching only'had finally gone. The calligraphy had obtained vigorous development under such background, and the style of nature and rhyme in the period of Song-Qi had taken shape. The 'the style of being charming' and 'the style of being at ease'calligraphic style of Wang Xianzhi , therefore had prevailed over the whole area.After Liang Wu Emperor was reigning over china,he attempted to revive the style of Zhong You's calligraphy with the help of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy ,but failed. On the contrary, Wang Xizhi's calligraphy was revitalized, whose style was in the middle of Wang Xianzhi's 'the present calligraphy is in slim style 'and Zhong You's 'the style of calligraphy in the past was plump'.The artistic power of 'the beauty of harmony'was the key factor that Wang Xizhi's calligraphy can revive and reverse calligraphy style.The paper consists of six chapters. Chapter one mainly analyzes the connotation of 'the beauty of harmony' and its manifestation in calligraphy by means of Confucianism and the Taoism thought; Chapter two, embarking from the social background,narrates the influence of metaphysics, natural aesthetic standard, Lao-Zhuang thought on calligraphy world formation of 'nature and rhyme' during Song Qi period and how Wang Xianzhi's calligraphy style of 'mild and charming'set up; Chapter three aims to introduce that Liangwudi abandoned Wang Xianzhi's calligraphy style of 'charming', and esteemed Zhong You's calligraphy style of 'integrate as a whole', 'classically and elegant'; Chapter four narrates that Liangwudi tended to spread Zhong You' style by means of Wang Xizhi's style, but failed, and Wang Xizhi calligraphy in middle instead duplicate abundant. By narrating Wang Xizhi's personality tutelage, manner getting along with people, the creative mood, adopted thoughts, esthetic pursuit as well as calligraphic font style, spirit,manner,dynamics and so on. Though Liangwudi intended to popularize ZhongYou's style rather than Wang Xizhi's style, the period saw a great revival in Wang's calligraphic style. Chapter Five narrates the historical origin of calligraphic style in the period of Song-Qi through Qi-Liang.From the calligraph ist's style in the period of Song-Qi through Qi-Liang,changes of Wang's and Xiao Liang's status, the theory of calligraphic functional evolution, political cultural phenomena in the controversy over modern style and ancient style. Chapter Six deeply discusses the adoptable significance of calligraphic beauty of harmony, discourses on the influence of the beauty of harmony on calligraphic creation and the cultivation of calligraphist moral behavior in order to explain the calligraphic beauty of harmony , which plays a remarkably vital role in the development of Chinese calligraphy.It is very necessary to understand the calligraphic history in Six Dynasties, to clarify its development and its remarkably historical significance of the calligraphic esthetics of Six Dynasties, and to discuss thoroughly the important status of the beauty of harmony in calligraphic thought in ancient China by analyzing the beauty of harmony of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy, which can facilitate in degree the transformation of the calligraphic style in the period of Qi-Liang.
