The Impact Of Guo Moruo's Translation On His Writing From The View Of The Translators' Empathy

Guo Moruo distinguished himself as an excellent poet, famous writer and great translator, holding a prominent position in the in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese Literature. He made great contributions to Chinese translation and literature. According to some books about him, his translations amount to the number of 30 books, covering over sixty writers in ten countries. And during the translation practice he formed his own translation theory, especially the theory about the translation of poems. He insisted poems must be translated by poets and put forward"flavor translation". He also agreed with Yan Fu's translation standards: (faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance), but he is inclined to elegance during translation. Meanwhile under the impact of translation, he wrote a great amount of works, covering a wide range of subjects, many of which are famous and well read.To trace the impact to its source, the change of translator's inner world, empathy is used here and a rough introduction is given of its genesis and development. Empathy in aesthetics means that the observer assimilates himself into his aesthetic object and assimilates an inanimate object into himself. While in translation, it is a transition from SL (source language) to image and then to TL (target language). Translators project themselves into the SL texts and the writers, experiencing contemplation and feedback to have the exact image and then to reproduce them. During translation, empathy inevitably arouses response in translators'minds and effects their thoughts and psychology. To make empathy smooth during translation, translators should make a selection and a study of writers and SL texts, and experience the similar emotional experiences in original works. During the explanation or statement, the thesis all takes Guo Moruo's translations as examples, to see how empathy functions at level of contents, form, style of words, writing skills, mood and so on and how deep that impact on Guo's mind. As a writer as well as a translator, Guo Moruo transplanted that impact from translation into his own creative writing. The thesis lists some foreign writers and their works that impact on his works most in his different writing periods. And a comparative study of Guo's translation of Goethe's Faust and his own works is given in this paper, to show the relationship between them from the angle of the contents or form, the characters, the writing techniques. Both brief and detailed comparison and analysis will be given to support the view that there exists a certain impact of translation on Guo's writing. And this study may be useful for researching the Chinese Literature during the May 4th Movement.
