By first answering the questions of"How do Chinese designers deal with the Chinese tradition and modern West culture?"and"How can Chinese designers get enlightenment from the concept of'Harmony of Yin and Yang'and promote the harmonious development of modern design?", this thesis tempts to discuss the three purposes of the research and its four implications, namely, first, guiding modern design by learning comprehensively Chinese traditional culture; second, constructing a harmonious design system by establishing design theory with Chinese characteristics; third, enriching modern design with innovative thinking and skills in order to achieve"equal importance of'method and tool'"; four, guiding and promoting design practically and theoretically. By doing literature review and comparative study of Chinese and West culture, and combining the concept of"Harmony of Yin and Yang"with modern design, the author answers how can it be possible to"design for harmony"in a brand new perspective.By a comparative analysis of the concept"Harmony of Yin and Yang"and modern design, the author elaborated the"different origins but same goal"of the two and the guidance of the former to the latter on the aspect of ideal, form and trend. Then the focus moved to the intrinsic relevance and reality of best expression of"harmony"and"design"in the scope of"human, society and nature"; it also discussed the dynamic coordination of the factors related to the harmonious development of modern design; clarified the feasibility and necessity of the instructive meaning of"Harmony of the Yin and Yang"on modern design. From the multi-perspective of history, reality, subjective and objective, the author concluded that the harmonious development of modern design is inseparable from the concept of"Harmony of Yin and Yang"; the similarities and differences between modern design and the"Harmony of Yin and Yang"is the result of the interaction between the subjective and the objective; subjectively, designers should analyze and look at the the similarities and differences between East and West from the perspective of dialectical materialism and historical materialism; from the interaction of the subjective and objective we also realize that the value of harmony in modern sense is in the unity of diversity and differences; in design we should learn to communicate and adapt to changes, dealing with the relationship between human, society and nature from the perspective of ecological balance, equip ourselves with comprehensive skills and knowledge; in the meanwhile, China should attach greater importance to the development of design of from both macro- and micro-undertakings; in the bidding for social designing project and in the evaluation of college art education, we should try to establish an effective training, management and employment mechanism. Only with the guidance of the concept of"Harmony of Yin and Yang", can we promote the continuous development and innovation of modern design (non-material design), establish an ecological design system with Chinese characteristics, and therefore build a harmonious China. In the last part, the author presents the ideas and suggestion of cultivating new designers from learning and practice.
