On The Practical Value Of Hetuvidya

Hetuvidya is regarded as one of the three schools of logic in the ancient world. However, the present research on hetuvidya is far from satisfying. Already extinguished in India, hetuvidya was once on the verge of vanishing in China. The main reason is that its practical value was not revealed and thus it seemed to be meaningless. Therefore, it is highly essential to discover the significance of hetuvidya and to employ new methods of research.Since the Northern and Southern Dynasty, the Sui Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty, with the introduction of Buddhism and the translation of Sutra, hetuvidya was introduced into China and had a positive influence on Chinese philosophy and literary theories. Research on the influence of hetuvidya on Chinese philosophy has proved to be extensive. However, research on the influence of hetuvidya on the development of Chinese literary theories was far from adequate. The influence of hetuvidya on ancient Chinese literary theories is primarily reflected in such works as Wen Xin Diao Long in the Wei-Jin Northern and Southern Dynasty and Ming Shi Ping Xuan in the Ming and Qing Dynasties by Wang Fuzhi. There were few documents to refer to when study is carried out on the relationship between hetuvidya and Wen Xin Diao Long, both of which date back to the remote past. Due to lack of systematic research, it is not yet decided whether the composition of Wen Xin Diao Long was under the influence of hetuvidya. Theories in hetuvidya left traces in the formation of Chinese literary theories which were manifested in"Xianliang Doctrine"of Wang Fuzhi's poetic theories.The application study constitutes an essential part of the research on hetuvidya. The adoption of Chinese literary theories may undoubtedly enrich the study on hetuvidya and push it forward to an advanced level of development and popularization. Based on studies done before and by adopting The methods of history research, documentary research, pragmatic research, dialectical logic and cognitive logic, this thesis analyzed the relationship between hetuvidya and the poetic theories in Wen Xin Diao Long and Ming Shi Ping Xuan and some practical value of hetuvidya is thereby revealed. and expt the scope of the application study the research on hetuvidya.
