Manipulation Of Ideology And Poetics By Analysis Of The Three Chinese Versions Of Moment In Peking

Translation has been traditionally regarded as a matter of linguistic transfer and been studied in the vacuum. In recent years, Translation Studies have broken the barriers of purely linguistic research turning to extralinguistic factors. During this period, Andre Lefevere, one of representatives of Manipulation School, points out that translation is the most obvious way of rewriting. Through translation process, literature works have been rewritten and manipulated by various ideology and poetics in a given society in a given way.Based on Lefevere's theory, this thesis carries out a case study by comparing three unabridged Chinese translations of Moment in Peking. The novel involves a great number of historical events beginning from Boxer Rebellion to Sino-Japanese War. In fact, the cultural and political factors involved in historical events are much more than in other plots, which is the starting point of the thesis. Thus by comparing the descriptions of historical events, the paper explores the ideological and poetological manipulation on translation strategies and language style in three Chinese versions. Based on the qualitative method, the thesis gives statistics of translation strategies adopted by different translators so as to show the variety between original ideology and target ideology. Meanwhile the statistics reflect different methods taken by translators. As for peotological manipulation, the characters of three Chinese versions are investigated from pragmatic and syntax view.In comparison, the writer discloses the applicability of manipulation theory on translation studies, meanwhile proposing some supplements on two grids given by Lefevere. Except the domain ideology and poetics, translator should also consider those of source text and translator himself.
