On Tone Color In Singing Art And Its Application

With the rapid economic development and globalization in terms of information and knowledge in today's society, the research on vocal music is conducted both at home and abroad in diversified and inter-disciplinary forms. On the basis of some relevant theories of acoustics, aerodynamics, medicine, linguistics, psychology, linguistic acoustics, singing aestheticism, performance studies, and literature, the art of singing is explored from the perspective of tone color in singing so as to achieve a correct and detailed understanding of the physical properties of tone color, source of sound, resonator, relationship between tone color and language, tone color and psychology in singing, tone color in singing and vocal music practice, which can facilitate a deeper research of the theory on tone color in singing.This article comprises four sections. Section one mainly introduces and analyzes human voice and its tone color, including its production, structure of vocal cords as its source, their functioning principle as well as their relationship with tone color. Section two sheds some light upon the physical properties of tone color as well as its five components--- source of sound, vowel, formant, resonance chamber, and vocalization skills. The relationship between auditory psychology, singing psychology and tone color is elaborated in section three. An analysis is made in section four of the application of tone color to singing art, including vocalization skills practice, choice of languages, choice of styles, choice of songs, and ways of emotion representation.
