Motivation is one of the most important factors in Second Language Learning (SLL). It has an important impact on Thai public school students when they are studying Chinese. Using the research achievement of motivation in the field of SLL for reference, combining with the actual Chinese learning situation of Thai students, we firstly made a test tool which could measure the Chinese learning motivation of Thai students. Then we tested 370 Thai students, analyzed the types of their learning motivation and the relationship between gender, family background, marks and motivation types. We found:1.There are 5 types of learning motivation:personal development motivation, learning environment motivation, passive motivation, interest motivation and abroad motivation.2.There are significant differences in learning motivation between boys and girls. Girls motivated by interest in a greater impact while most boys learned for their personal development. The impact of learning environment motivation and abroad motivation on students of Chinese ancestry is significantly different with that on students of non-Chinese ancestry. There are no significant difference between elective students and compulsory students.3.Chinese scores of Thai students were positively influenced by interest motivation most, followed by personal development motivation and learning environment motivation. Passive motivation was negatively correlated. No significant relationship was found between scores and abroad motivation. In accordance with the personality and characteristics of Thai students, we proposed some specific teaching strategies which could stimulate their learning motivation.
