A Study Of The Culture-loaded Words' Translation In Wolf Totem

"Wolf Totem" is a long novel composed of a series of wolf stories. It describes Beijing students'life and experience in the Olonbulag of the Inner Mongolian during the 1960s and the 1970s. The description of the grasslands'life and natural ecology, the review and evaluation of Chinese history, the appreciation and praise to the nomadic spirit and the close contact with the wolf give "Wolf Totem" distinctive cultural characteristics. In this paper, the translation of the culture-loaded words in "Wolf Totem" done by Howard Goldblatt is given a though study. After an analysis of their translation methods, the author find that nearly 70 percent of the culture-loaded words is translated by the way of transliteration, literal translation, transliteration with explanation, literal translation with explanation and other methods. About 30 percent of the culture-loaded words is translated by the way of free translation, image conversion and omission. It shows that foreignization is the main strategy used by translator and the cultural information in the book is conveyed. This can be fully proved from Howard Goldblatt's views on translation, especially his attitude on how to deal with cultural factors in translation. Finally, the paper explains the feasibility of foreignization and points out that foreignization is an essential way of exporting Chinese culture and ensures the cross-cultural communication.
