Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest novelists as well as a great poet in English literary history. As an excellent novel of Thomas Hardy, Tess of the d'urbervilles has become a classic loved by generations of readers and it has become one of the most important canons that continue to interest a great number of critics. Tess of the d'urbervilles describes a girl that is seduced by one man and deserted by the other. The novel deals Tess is one of the greatest women in the annals of English literature.Tess's tragedy reflects all kinds of sufferings of impoverished peasants who have to turn workers after the bourgeois invading. The cause of the tragedy of Tess has something to do not only with economy and class but also with ethics, religion and laws , still her tragedy comes from her own ethics and religion to a certain extent.The thesis is divided into the following parts: introduction, body of the thesis (from Chapter one to Chapter three) and conclusion. Introduction focuses on Thomas Hardy's major literary careers and literary works, Xuzhimo and others spread works in China and many Chinese scholars to the study of Thomas Hardy's point of view. Chapter one explores Thomas Hardy's Christian thoughts and sprits, the relationship between the novel and the Bible. Chapter two explores Thomas Hardy's tragic consciousness and evolution meliorism ,Tess's tragedy comes from following aspects: the social economic, the religion, the laws, the ethic, Tess's traits of characters. The thesis also analysis the using of evolution meliorism in the novel. Chapter three wants to analysis the writing skills and artistic charm of Thomas Hardy's novels. Particularly the features of the novels in symbols, metaphors, imagery and native techniques etc. Conclusion summarizes Thomas Hardy's position in the history of English literature.
