As a novel of character and environment of Thomas Hardy,Tess of the d'Urbervilles is favored by most Chinese readers and media. In China, there are many translation versions, and many translators and scholars have made their studies based on various translation versions. However, the previous literature studies on this work tended to stress the language translation and the influence of translational environment on the translating process has often been ignored as a whole.Based on the Eco-translatology,which was raised by Professor Hu Gengshen in2001,this thesis compares and analyses Zhang Guruo's and Sun Fali's versions of Tess of the d'Urbervilles.Based on the Chinese translation versions of Tess of the d'Urbervilles, the thesis reviews and summarizes the translating process and compares versions of Zhang Guruo and Sun Fali.On the macro level, the translational eco-environment will be analyzed and compared. On the micro level, the three-dimensional transformation is adopted to find out the differences in the two translation versions in detail.By analyzing the literature work under the guidance of Eco-translatology,comparing the merits and demerits of the two Chinese versions in transferring the intentions of the writer and the artistic characteristics of the original novel, and finding the inner reasons, the author gets the conclusion that translators will adopt different adaptation and selection based on different translational eco-environment,and the degree of holistic adaptation and selection can determine the quality of translation versions and the acceptance of readers. This thesis provides a relatively new way to study the work and other literature works. At the same time,it enriches the Eco-translatology itself to some extents.
