On Handling Of Redundancy In C-E Tourism Translation

With the deepening of its reforming and opening up policy and fastening of globalization, China's transnational tourism industry has been flourishing, which brings about a growing need for translation of Chinese tourism materials. The quality of tourism translation has a great effect on publicizing Chinese culture, China's image in international communication and economic profits of the tourism industry. As a consequence, it is of great practical significance to carry out a study on handling of redundancy in C-E tourism translation. However, former researches on tourism translation and redundancy give too much emphasis on summarizing concrete translation methods or techniques from a general point of view, thus providing little theoretical guidance and lacking a systematic study on the topic. Apart from that, there are few researches on handling of redundancy in C-E tourism translation specifically.This study attempts to apply German school of functionalist approaches to the discussion of handling of redundancy in C-E tourism translation. From functionalist approaches'point of view, translating is a purposeful activity. To achieve the skopos of target texts, it is necessary for translators to start corresponding analysis of translation brief with the aim of finding out some macro guiding principles for translating. Besides, a source text analysis needs to be done to find out the specific features of source texts. Furthermore, translation errors related to redundancy imbalance should also be studied to manifest reasons for them and insights for improving them. Taking functionalist approaches as the theoretical basis, the present study is aimed to bring some key terms, such as translation errors, conventions into a concrete and unified framework in the hope of building a systematic study on handling of redundancy in C-E tourism translation.After presenting a review on former researches by predecessors, the present thesis has given a detailed analysis on several key terms adopted from functionalist approaches, such as skopos, skopos rules, translation brief, translation errors and conventions. Then, a specific framework which draws insights from those terms for the present thesis has been presented. Finally, functionalist approaches have been applied in analyzing translation practice of redundancy in C-E tourism translation in the specific framework, which consists of handling of redundancy in Chinese tourism texts and handling of redundancy imbalance in target texts. Research methodology adopted is mainly qualitative along with occasionally quantitative ones. By probing into those concrete examples under the guidance of functionalist approaches, the study reaches a conclusion. On one hand, semantic redundancy in the source tourism texts is mostly composed by synonyms, especially synonyms made up by Chinese four-character phrases. Entailment, the recurrence of the same words and anaphora are three other ways in conducting semantic redundancy. On the other hand, translation convention of handling redundancy in tourism translation is represented by specific translation techniques. Omission is mostly adopted by translators in translating semantic redundancy, and then paraphrase, comprehensive use of omission and paraphrase, literal transference on the prerequisite of not causing redundancy imbalance; addition is chosen in translating cultural redundancy in source Chinese tourism texts. As for redundancy imbalance, deletion is applied in dealing with over-redundancy, and addition in handling under-redundancy which includes inadequate translation of culture-specific terms and lack of cohesive devices. At textual level, comprehensive use of deletion and addition is applied.C-E tourism translation is a vital branch of practical translation studies. Under the guidance of functionalist approaches, the author of the thesis hopes that the present study can shed some lights on C-E tourism translation, which will promote a better international communication and improve China's image in the world.
