In the era of knowledge economy, enterprises' competition, creation, using and increment of knowledge and rational deployment of resources finally rely on carrier of knowledge namely knowledge worker (KW) to realize. By way of knowledge's carrier, knowledge workers are more important in enterprises' actions and become the important component of enterprises values. We understand more distinctly facts of enterprises' knowledge workers, and more effectively motivate them. Thus, the issue becomes greatly attention to each enterprise that how to motivate them on the basis of needs characteristics.Firstly, the author introduces knowledge workers' concept and its characteristics to the point. According to the results of motivation between overseas and our country and enterprises' some real practices, Author puts five theoretical hypotheses about needs characteristics and motivation of knowledge workers. The author carries out non-random sample survey about 305 knowledge workers on the basis of theoretical hypotheses and makes statistical analysis on sample enterprises and sample knowledge workers. Then the author expounds the study's ideas and methods.Secondly, finds those knowledge workers' major needs and their important degree which in proper order are individual maturity, environment supports, achievement in professional work, working in one's own master and money or wealth. The knowledge workers' needs characteristics take on distinct differences with enterprise's character, knowledge workers' age, sex and their educational level. This paper also discusses enterprise knowledge workers' motivational actuality at present and finds that the major motivation ways to knowledge worker by statistical analysis which their important degree that in proper order are reward motivation, job motivation, culture motivation and organization motivation. At the same time, introduces effect analysis to KW. Then, the author discusses and analyzes distinct problems to KW's motivation.Thirdly, the author builds a notional mode of knowledge workers 'motivation on the basis of theoretical and empirical conclusions and knowledge workers' motivational modes in the overseas and our country, and puts forward principal requests and principles. Finally, the author puts forward some tactical suggestionsabout knowledge workers' motivation that enterprises should value individualmaturity and career development, provide better environment supports, assist them to realize their achievement motive in professional work, build an unique and rational compensation system, and motivate them in terms of their needs and needs characteristics to practise different management.
