Charge nurses in military hospitals are nursing managers in various departments. They are not only responsible for the administrative organization management of wards, but also are involved in monitoring quality of service in the hospital, fund budget and other work. Excellent charge nurse has an important significance for the department and the hospital. How to establish a scientific and rational system of talent evaluation for screening talents, training talents, and uncovering potential talents objectively and effectively has become a serious problem. Competency model has been widely used in various fields of human resource management and some progress has been made in the related researches, which gives indications for the chief nurse selection and training.Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Questionaire was applied in this research to explore the personality, the relationship between personality and performance of 301 charge nurses and general nurses in military hospitals. Combined with the previous year performance evaluation, we explored competency of charge nurses in military hospitals and then established competency model about personality of them, which can be the reference for the human resources management in military hospitals. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:Firstly, compared with common nurse, charge nurses in military hospitals have the characters such as stable, adventurous, self-discipline, and have low score in suspicion, sophistication, anxiety and tension as well.Secondly, discounting the general factors, sociability, intelligence, stability, persistency, excitement, perseverance, adventure, sensibility, self-discipline, anxiety and tension were negatively correlated with performance.The competency model about personality of charge nurses in military hospitals includes five dimensionalities (emotions, the style of Handling matters and intercourse, leadership, decision-making capability, ability and insight, sensibility) and 16 specific characteristics including sociability, intelligence, stability, persistency, excitement, perseverance, adventure, sensibility, self-discipline, anxiety and tension.
