Wang Yun, a famous paleographers and educator in the years of Qing Dynasty, wrote the book Methods of Teaching Children, which was the earliest monograph of primary school Chinese teaching" in our country. In this book, he expounded the primary school education systematically at that time, and proposed the education idea of"students are human beings". Combined with his own teaching experience, as well as the student's physical and mental characteristics, Wang Yun put forward many teaching methods on how to read and write, which has reference and guidance for modern Chinese education practice.In his book Methods of Teaching Children, Wang Yun pointed out"students should been treated with respect, but not the way treated with pig or dog."He held that educators should respect students and teach students according to the development of their individuality, and was against corporal punishment education. He thought,"human beings'talents are different". These talents could be divided into"great talent","small talent","sensitive person"and"blunt one". It was important to properly inspire and instruct students according to their aptitude. He emphasized teaching should adhere to education law based on students' physiological and psychological development characteristics, and he also thought educators should help students study by using proper methods from easy to difficult, step by step. Besides, studying should carry out in different time periods and stages. He appealed to the"appearance of good teachers", condemned"ignorance ones", and expected"the whole world teachers have the ambition of making their students mourn three years for them after they passed away". The Methods of Teaching Children also proposed various teaching methods, such as using the direct-vision method in literacy education, the"happy teaching method"in the process of reading, and"wipe batch delimit circle method", as well as"explain-heckle method". On how to teach composition, he advocated"free expression"and"encouragement", which are still mostly used in the contemporary Chinese teaching practice.The educational significance and teaching methods in The Methods of Teaching Children have the reference and guiding value to current Chinese Educational Practice. Owing to the limitations of historical conditions, The Methods of Teaching Children had some shortcomings. Therefore, investigators should reject its dross, assimilate its essence, objectively evaluate the Chinese educational ideas and dig its modern value in The Methods of Teaching Children, thus applying it to modern Chinese education. By using general induction and classification analysis methods and combining with the teaching practice, the author objectively summarizes education ideas and teaching methods in The Methods of Teaching Children, and explores its directive function on Chinese education practice.
