Children's popular science readings plays an important role in the traditional sciencepopularization, for it shoulders many responsibilities such as inspiring children'scuriosity and interest in science and technology, and making up the insufficiency ofscientific background knowledge education in school education system. The series ofpopular science readings,'Shi Wan Ge Wei Shen Me'published by Juvenile&Children's Publishing House is a classical masterpiece of popular science readingsin People's Republic of China. Since first published in 1961, the series already soldover 100 million with 5 versions and 93 volumes. As the first brand of Chinesepopular science books, it influences several generations of Chinese in terms ofscientific enlightenment and education. The thesis conducts a systematic research onthis series from the perspective of science communication.The first chapter compares and analyzes several editions of the series in differentperiods from the perspective of publishing. With reference to English, Russian andChinese language materials, we explore the source of the title'Shi Wan Ge Wei ShenMe'and the story behind it. After analyzing the title structure, format selection, colormatching, picture style, wording way, illustration changes, and packaging of the fiveversions, we conclude various characteristics of an outstanding children's popularscience book.From the perspective of science communication, the second chapter examines thechanges of the series in the context of the development of People's Republic of China,and explores the close relationship between the characteristics and changes of theseries and the development in science and science population in China. The chapteralso analyzes its great contribution to scientific enlightenment and knowledge supplement and the causes for its ups and downs.The third chapter analyzes the dilemma the science popularization among Chinesechildren is facing and the new changes of the current publication of children's popularscience books, sums up the valuable experience left by the traditionalknowledge-based popular science books represented by the'Shi Wan Ge Wei ShenMe', and provides several advices for the science popularization to adapt thetransition from the traditional way to the scientific communion.In short, on the basis of concluding the characteristics of the publication of'Shi WanGe Wei Shen Me', the thesis interprets the reasons for its up and downs in the contextof science popularization in China, which is conducive to today's sciencecommunication and popularization.
