Any language, carrier of culture , is representative of the culture to which it belongs. As part of the culture, the euphemistic ways of speaking, which are often used as communicative strategies, exist in all languages. Owing to the fact that the euphemistic ways of speaking have been neglected in the past English teaching in middle schools, students , who have little knowledge of the euphemistic ways of speaking in English, often communicate with others by putting Chinese ways into English word by word. As a result they repeatedly come across unexpected troubles and even fail in their communications. The actual practice in the teaching of English has , to a certain extent, impeded the cultivation of the students' communicative ability, especially their oral ability. In this connection, the present author sets out to make a study to prove the importance and necessity of euphemistic ways of speaking in the teaching of English, and further attempts to explore effective ways to improve the students' oral communicative ability. The dissertation bases the collection of materials, analysis and discussion on the teaching practice and teaching materials in middle schools. Proceeding from the study of the definition, the historic backgrounds and features of the euphemistic ways of speaking in English, the dissertation will further analyze the causes of the middle students' failure in their daily communications and illustrate the importance and necessity of English euphemistic ways of speaking in classroom teaching. Based on these facts, the dissertation will finally discuss the principles and contents, and put forward some practical ways of presentation. The difficult points in the study are the attempt to explore the historic causes and the features of the euphemistic ways of speaking in English. Because most of the corresponding research, so far, at home and abroad, has focused upon therhetorical role of English euphemism. Not much research has been made into the euphemistic ways of speaking. The focal point of the study lies in such aspects as the role of euphemistic ways of speaking in communication, the principles, contents and methods in classroom teaching .The principles consist of four parts: syllabus and curriculum standard, teaching contents, step-by-step instruction, and suiting the instruction to the students' level. The teaching contents include three forms of Euphemistic ways of speaking. On these basis, three approaches are suggested in the dissertation. They are contrastive analysis, task-based activities, and simulated communication. Simultaneously the focal points are also the new ideas that the present author put forward in the thesis since they constitute the crux in improving the students' oral ability through appropriate integration of English euphemistic ways of speaking with classroom English teaching. The present author sincerely hopes that the new ideas and practical approaches put forward in the article will be instrumental to our colleagues in our teaching practice of English language.
