The research-oriented study, as one of key components in the curriculum of comprehensive-practice activity in senior middle schools, has been decided as a required subject. It was first included in senior high syllabus issued by Ministry of Education in January, 2000, and was adopted by ten provinces and municipalities in September, 2000. It is a practice-oriented synthetic course in which students are required to study and probe initiatively and freely. A study method like a scientific research helps students not only acquire knowledge but also get into an active and creative study method so that the passive study method can be removed, which helps to cultivate the ability of students to create and practice, to develop their potential and creative personality so that the purpose of quality education can be realized. Senior Middle Schools in Fujian decided to apply research-oriented study as a required course during the 2001-2002 school year. The thesis starts from today's education and the purpose of establishing research -oriented study, expounding the psychological basis and feasibilities, probes into the carryout of English teaching and learning through research-oriented study, and sums up the achievements and drawbacks during the research and raises problems for further investigation.
