As part of psychological quality, self-confidence is one of the affection factors. It plays an important role in language teaching and learning. Demonstrated by language teaching and learning studies, self-confidence has a lot to do with languge acquisition or language learning and the cultivation of self-confidence becomes an important part of affection education. If cultivated well, the students' self-confidence in English teaching and learning can improve our language teaching. Although many teachers in China have given attention to the influence exerted by students' psychological and affective factors on their grades, they are often too busy to attach necessary importance to the cultivation of the students' self-confidence in the course of their study. As a result, the students have done a poor job in their English studies, which has become a problem that has to be dealt with in China's present-day English teaching. Now, with the development of psychology, more and more researchers give their attention to the affection factors in English teaching and learning. However, few people have done much on the correlation between the cultivation of the students' self-confidence and the junior English teaching and learning. Therefore, such correlational study becomes the topic for study in this paper. This thesis is written against the background of the newly-designed syllabus in China. Its purpose is to call people's attention to cultivating the positive affection of the students. For it, the thesis first surveys what have been achieved in the study of self-confidence, discusses the relationship between self-confidence and the foreign language teaching and re-defines the self-confidence in psychology and in English teaching and learning. With the help of questionnaires, it obtains information on the influence of teachers' teaching methodology and family enviroment on the students' self-confidence as well as the status quo of the students' self-confidence. Some questionnaires are formulated in a special way andstudied using SPSS to get the result; others are formulated in a different way and studied using statistical methods to describe the result. All these results show that there is a positive correlation between the level of students' self-confidence and their English scores.Another issue this thesis deals with is the cause of junior middle school students' lacking enough self-confidence in English learning. It is carefully analyzed and workable methods or measures are introduced to help cultivate students' self-confidence. Generally speaking, these methods or measures are of four kinds which the teacher must appropriately adopt to help improve the cultivation of the students' self-confidence so as to eventually help the students do better in their English learning. It is the accurate application of these measures that can ensure the students' success in gaining both, which is further proved to be workable through the GLM Univariate and Independent-Sample T test. As the paper illustrates again and again, there is indeed a positive correlation between the students' self-confidence and their English learning. Finally, the paper does some experiments on some students to prove the possibility of the proposed measures taken to cultivate the students' self-confidence. Both its theoretical discussion and the experiments done, in the light of the present-day junior English teaching in China, demonstrate that English teaching should be based on the viewpoint that students must always be put in the first place and that self-confidence and English learning benefit from each other.
