English is a language used all over the world. English course is a compulsory part of the curriculum in middle school in China. Writing is one of the four basic skills students should master in the course of learning English. Many students can't get satisfactory marks in NMET. Teachers should pay attention to the cause of the students' low writing ability.  English writing teaching aims to improve the students' writing ability by using some writing strategies so that improvement of their English level can be achieved. Here the study will proceed in the light of three questions list as follows: What problems do Chinese students usually have in English writing? How do writing strategies influence students' writing ability? How to improve the students writing ability?  In this thesis the writer introduced the background and significance of the research; the criteria for good writing, major problems in the students' writing; reviewed language learning strategies, writing strategies, the influence of writing strategies on the writing ability; based on an experiment, it proved that process writing approach worked well on improving the writing ability of the students; the writer also explained how to improve writing ability of the students writers by using process writing approach. Then the writer gives some suggestions, came up with the limitations for the pedagogy and the further research in this field. However, the study in this paper is by no means exhaustive owing to the limitation of resources, references and time. Some other problems are assumed to be the factors affecting the developments of students' English writing ability and worth further studying.
