A Study On Competency Of Tsinghua University Student-Mentor

Tsinghua University student-mentor system was established in 1953, and has made great contributions to the development of Tsinghua University. The quality of student-mentor is the most important factor impacting the quality of all undergraduate students. Therefore, how to select, train and evaluate student-mentors is very important. Competency Assessment Method is an important technique of human resources management. Based on this method, this study develops the Competency Model of Tsinghua University Student-mentor.In this study, 20 student-mentors from 9 departments are chosen as the subject for case study. Diversified methods including Behavioral Event Interview (BEI), Coding, T test were used in this study. The main results are as follows:I. There is significant correlation between length of note and time of interview, but not between competency time and length of note or time of interview.II. Competency dictionary can be grasped by coders. There is no significant difference between the two coders.III. Excellent student-mentors and ordinary ones can be distinguished by competency degree, but not by competency time.The competencies which can distinguish excellent and ordinary student-mentors are: Client (Student) Service Orientation, Impact and Guide, Initiative, Interpersonal Understanding, Information Seeking, Developing others, Analytical Thinking.IV. There are some differences between Competency Model of Tsinghua University student-mentor and the generic model of Community people in Spencer's book. The differences come from the different objects of study, and the specific situation of Tsinghua University.There are also differences between this model and the result of Gu Qian from Shanxi University. The differences mainly come from the different position determination of student-mentor and different research methods.
