Translation enjoyed a long history as a teaching means in foreign language teaching. But at the beginning of last century, the"Grammar-Translation Method"was strongly criticized by the"Direct Method". Since then, translation has been repelled constantly in foreign language teaching. At present senior school, English communicative ability and English thinking are given priority, various new kinds of teaching methods are welcomed and all English Immense lass is very popular. Whereas translation is considered as little or no function in English teaching. Besides, only listening, speaking, reading and writing were set as language skill goals in the New Curriculum Standard for Senior English in 2003, it seemed to confirm the view that translation should be deleted completely from English class.Actually, factors such as language environment, teaching equipment, teachers'quality,learning styles and habits have to be taken into consideration in any teaching method. Translation is still an effective way of English teaching at senior school. Translation in this paper refers to teaching translation, that is, teachers help students understand and master English knowledge, and also cultivate their language abilities by means of translation or active roles of mother tongue to deal with teaching contents and materials. Teachers can make a better use of translation at senior English class is the main purpose of this paper. Meanwhile, basic translation skills for senior school students is concerned during the process of teaching translation. In this regard, this paper firstly discusses the main reasons why translation was repelled in senior English teaching, then analyzes its functions. At last, the paper provides some constructive suggestions of how to use translation in senior English.In a word, by proving necessity, feasibility and practicability, the paper tries to confirm the positive functions of translation and provide some suggestions and references for teachers to use it in class effectively.
