English reading is not only a kind of intellectual activity to obtain information from discourses but also a kind of mental process to achieve meanings from discourses. Lots of English teachers have realized the importance of English reading and also have attached emphasis on it. However, many English teachers just always divide the complete discourse into language points. As a matter of fact, it is far more enough to explain language points, and it is necessary to teach students how to analyze discourse structures according to different genres and themes. This thesis tries applying the genre approach into English reading teaching by designing four cases.The genre approach is a kind of teaching method which is based on the genre theories. It mainly studies the genre structures of discourse. It is now widely applied in North America and Australia. The genre approach supplies a new method for teaching English reading, which aims at training students to have genre ideas when they are reading so that they can enhance their reading abilities and speed.This thesis is made up of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction of this study, which mainly introduces the aims, significance, contents and methods of the study. In chapter two, the writer mainly expatiates the theories of reading and the genre approach and related studies. In chapter three, the writer first summarizes the main characteristics of the English textbook of Oxford English (Shanghai Edition), which are currently used by high school students. The writer also makes a statistics and analysis of the texts according to their genres. In chapter four, this thesis comes up with an opinion that the genre approach can be applied into English reading teaching and four cases are also designed to support this opinion. In chapter five, the writer of this thesis gives several suggestions to English teachers for applying the Genre Approach to teach English reading.
