English teaching and learning (ETL) in high schools has been under the great pressure of the College-Entrance Examination (or MET) for long, especially in the countryside areas. As a result of the problems caused by the current exam-oriented education, quantities of middle school pupils with latent potentials lost academic development opportunities. Most to our distress, of all the subjects English is an obstacle hard to conquer to so many teenagers. The efficiency of the English teaching and learning turns increasing important. Many experts believe there are many reasons for this phenomenon.First of all , we may attribute it to English teachers, who have focused too much attention over the past years on different teaching methods and techniques rather than appropriate English learning strategies. Thus, different methods take turns to be put into practice such as the direct Method, the Audio-Lingual Method, the Audio-visual Method, the Cognitive Approach, the Communicative Method, the Natural Approach etc. However, in the end what made us disappointed was that the English teaching and learning efficiency has not been improved obviously, according to lots of surveys and analyses. On the other hand, English-learning strategies undoubtedly have long been neglected in English teaching and learning, which accounts for unsatisfactory effects. With more educators engaged in the research of English learning strategies and the application of New Curriculum Standards, it has thus become significant and necessary to cultivate English learning strategies in English teaching at senior high schools. Only when students actively participate in the learning activities and make full use of effective learning strategies willingly and independently can they become masters of learning.According to the learners' cognitive process, English learning strategies usually consist of following main parts: namely meta-cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, affective strategies, communicative strategies and resource & compensating strategies. The author's questionnaire surveys over 200 students in Grade 2 with an average level from all the four high schools in Ying Cheng City, Hubei province. Then the study analyzes the data of the learning strategy state at different angles and drew some conclusions, and then provides some approaches in strategy training. It is hoped that all the work can serve as a theoretic basis and actual reference in teaching improvement. The present thesis is the record of the author's study of English learning strategies at the local four high schools in the home county in accordance with some scholars' studies on English learning strategies and the specific situation of these schools. The author finally expresses his hope that all the English teachers and researchers devote themselves to developing the students' competence of active learning and achieving the goal.
