As one of the treasures of the Chinese nation, Wushu has a long history and profound cultural meaning. It is also one of the traditional sports events, an important part of PE teaching and special part of PE class with its special national features, which also has its characteristics of health-keeping, self-defence, moral character cultivation and nature nourishment. It also has its unreplaceable functions in strengthening the health of college students' body and mind, developing their moral qualities, setting up their national self-esteem and carrying forward the traditional Chinese culture, which actually ensures its position in PE teaching. Developing Wushu in colleges and universities can not only promote the development of the athletics programs among the masses and carry forward the nationwide health-keeping programs, but also help to spread and inherit the traditional Chinese culture. The author studied the present situation of Wushu teaching in colleges and universities of Zhejiang province through investigations and questionaires. 26 colleges and universities were investigated. Considering the developments of college students, society and Wushu itself, the author also predicted the development trend of Wushu teaching through statistics and analysis of the obtained information including the teaching objectives, contents of Wushu and students' interests, etc. Thus, the teaching contents, methods and teacher's role could be regulated; the role of Wushu in college PE teaching be further developed; and meanwhile some valuable information for curriculum reform of college Wushu teaching in Zhejiang province be provided. The following findings are based on the careful investigations, mathematical statistics and reference to various documents:1. The teaching objectives of Wushu basically correspond to the Essentials of National College PE Curriculum. Present levels of Wushu teaching in different regions fo Zhejiang province are showing no difference and students' cognitions of Wushu are quite similar.2. Most colleges and universities which were investigated mainly applied the simple technique-based teaching, which was symbolized by "Simplified Shadow Boxing" and "Fundamental Long Punch". However, professional theories and health-keeping knowledge were somewhat ignored, let alone the traditional national culture. Thus, Wushu teaching didn't actually involve cultural instruction.3. Present simple technical proficiency assessment seems a bit to fall behind. Students' learning attitudes and the ability of lifelong drilling should also be adopted in the assessment system. Teachers are beginning to realize the importance of students' comprehensive abilities, and examination and assessment are diversified.4. Students' motives of selecting Wushu are quite different, mainly for health-keeping, self-defence and entertainment. They are satisfied with simplistic and cannot meet the needs of students for health-keeping, self-defence and lifelong drilling. The dullness of the teaching methods cannot arouse their interests. Besides, the professional skill of some teachers cannot fully meet the demands of contemporary Wushu teaching.5. Technique instruction should be always combined with culture instruction in future Wushu teaching. Meanwhile health-keeping prescriptions and lifelong drilling should be highlighted so that Wushu can be a medium in carrying forward the national cultures and inheriting the national spirits, which actually will result in the changes of teaching contents, methods of Wushu as well as teacher's role. Wushu class on the whole. Yet the content of Wushuteaching is a bit too6. Martial Arts Teaching hould be optimized to improve student interest in learning, highlighting the contents of the fitness of martial arts; the same time should also increase the professional standards of teachers in colleges and universities .
