This dissertation is a study of the application to the teaching of English grammar in senior middle schools in China. It sets out to prove that contrastive analysis is an effective method for teaching English in senior middle schools in China. Based on my personal teaching experience and the outcome of surveys of both teachers and students, I did an experiment on how to apply contrastive analysis in English grammar teaching in my own school in Hunan Province, which proved to be fruitful. The dissertation is divided into four chapters. The first chapter clarifies the objectives of the research, gives a brief description of how English grammar is normally taught in middle schools, and then discusses the role played by our native Chinese language in the teaching of English as a foreign language.Chapter Two briefly discusses the notion of language transfer, which forms the psychological foundation of contrastive analysis. It shows that contrastive analysis contributes a lot to reducing interference due to the negative transfer of the Chinese language in English teaching and learning. This part further explains the concept of contrastive analysis, describes its development, modes and the significance of the research. The third chapter focuses on the implementation of contrastive analysis between English and Chinese in the teaching of English grammar in middle schools. The experiment is done on the teaching of English verbs. Through a number of examples and research experiment, this chapter reports some encouraging results about this teaching method. The fourth chapter is an analysis of the results of the teaching experiment, which proves that contrastive analysis is one of the most effective teaching approaches to the teaching of English grammar to Chinese students. The last chapter is the conclusion.
