A Preliminary Study Of Peking Opera "Bao Gong

In the long-stretched branch of history of Peking Opera, a lot of worksabout Bao Gong has been shown respectively. According to the results ofincomplete statistics done by the writer, there are over50differentadaptations of “Bao Gong drama” that have been existed. Among them,works such as “The Case of Chen Shimei”“Striking the King”“ChiSang Town” and “Scouting the Mountain Yin” have been acclaimed andlong-lasting. Together with other works, they have established a systemof “Bao Gong drama”. With the endeavors and refinements done bygenerations of Peking Opera artists, a whole set of methods aboutportraying the figure of “Bao Gong drama” has also been discovered.In this essay, I shall examine the “Bao Gong drama” and the ways ofportraying the figure of Bao Gong through, firstly breaking down theelements of that compose the figure of “Bao Gong”(facial makeups,costumes, helmets and other accessories); second, analyzing differentportrayals of Bao Gong through music, and attempt to conclude thecontributions to both the “Bao Gong drama” and the methods of portrayingBao Gong’s figure, which are completed by the middle-aged male actorssuch as Jin Shaoshan and Qiu Shengrong and senior male actors such asLi Guichun and Li Ruchun; and third, studying the over-sixty-year historyof “Bao Gong drama” since the independence of People Republic of China.
