The Influence Of Interpersonal Adjustment Focus On Goal Pursuit Of College Students

The researches show widespread concern about goal pursuit in recent years, Higgins proposed regulatory focus theory,whichprovides a new perspective toexplore this issue. Significant others also affect the pursuit of goals.This study attempts to explore how interpersonal regulatory focus influences goal pursuit in different contexts.There are two studiesrstudy1specialized General Regulatory Focus Measures for Chinese.Study2dividesgoal pursuits into personal goal pursuit and interpersonal goal pursuit,exploring how interpersonal regulatory focus influences goal pursuit and perceived regulatory similarity,and whether perceived regulatory similarity can mediates these effects.In study1,240college students were adopted with General Regulatory Focus Measures and Regulatory Focus Questionnaire to explore a specialized General Regulatory Focus Measures for Chinese.General scale’s Cronbach a is0.808, promotion focus and prevention focus subscales’ Cronbach a are0.824and0.712. The factor loadings of each items are among0.45-0.76. Confirmatory factor analysis shows the revised questionnaire has good construct validity and has good congruent validity with Regulatory Focus Questionnaire.In study2,350university students were divided into four groups, then adopted with the revised General Regulatory Focus Measures, use instruction to manipulate companion regulatory focus type, finish decision-making tasks and goal pursuit questionnaire. The data were analyzed with regression analysis.The result shows, in the context of personal goal pursuit, the interaction between subject promotion focus and companion promotion focus can significantly predict subject seek help, rate companion instrumentally and motivation level three dependent variables.In the context of interpersonal goal pursuit the main effect of subject promotion focus can significantly predict subject seek help, rate companion instrumentally and motivation level three dependent variables, the main effect of companion promotion focus and companion prevention focus can significantly predict motivation level. Subject prevention focus can significantly negative predict level of confidence in both contexts. In the context of personal goal pursuit, Moderating effects of companion promotion focus on subject seek help and rate companion instrumentally can be partially mediated by perceived regulatory similarity, but In the context of interpersonal goal pursuit we don’t find these effects. In a word, the revised General Regulatory Focus Measures has good reliability and validity. In the context of personal goal pursuit, as we expected we found interpersonal regulatory focus contribute to goal pursuit and these effects can be partially mediated by perceived regulatory similarity.However, in the context of interpersonal goal pursuit, unlike expected we only found the main effect of subject promotion focus, then we have analyzed the possible causes of this question.
