Oriental painting and Western painting are very different. A lot of factors affecting thedevelopment of each painting, material and technique are two of them. Due to Orientalpainting and western painting contain much content, so the writer decided to choose therepresentative painting to discuss. In Oriental painting, Chinese painting is the mostrepresentative, so writer narrowed the range of discussion, only material and technique ofChinese painting and western painting would be discussed.In early western painting, there is the rock painting, pottery painting,frescoes, waxpainting. In the early Chinese painting, there is the rock painting, pottery’ pottery painting,murals and painting on silk. By comparing the development of early paintings, we can foundboth experienced the stage of rock painting, pottery painting, and mural painting. Except themural painting, the material of rock painting and pottery painting is similar. The image isdifferent between them because of the culture, but the expression of language of paintingmaterials was close-Two key factors formed the different development between Chinese painting andWestern painting. That two different main painting materials they used is ground andmedium.By comparing the permeability, the stiffness and the absorption of the ground, summedup the difference of the focus, the posture, the ground utilization and the coloring habit ofpainting.By comparing the color rendering, the dilution, the thickness and the drying speed ofmedium, summed up the difference of the dyeing method, the brushwork texture and therestriction of painting.There are many factors impacted Chinese painting and Western painting formed twodifferent style. Painting material is one of the most important factors. One of the mostcritical factor is the difference of the medium and the ground. The combination of the purewater and soft Xuan paper or silk played a key role in Chinese painting and led it toward afreehand brushwork style. The combination of the slow dry oil and solid smooth ground wasa key factor in Western painting and led it toward a style of reappearing objectivity. Overall,Different material in Chinese painting and Western painting did not only make the criticalfactor for their own expressive form, but also push the development of them. Materialsignificantly influenced the later history and forming phase of these two different paintingsystem.
