In a broad sense, course materials include student textbooks, instructor’s manuals and exercise books. For teaching Chinese as a foreign language, we wonder that whether the instructor’s manual which guides a teacher’s practice to inherit practical skills can really play an important role. This paper aims to research the content and form of the instructor’s manual. Deeply research is necessary in order to promote the reform and development of materials submitted ideas.In this study, the titles of the integrated textbooks for elementary Chinese were read published by five major publishing houses over the past decade, and learned that the vast majority of textbooks were not equipped with instructor’s manuals. Besides that, the research had the teachers who teach Chinese overseas answer a questionnaire to learn their opinions about instructor’s manuals and requirements. The survey showed that the teachers whose working age is short, experience is insufficient were obviously the vast majority of users. Meanwhile we have learned the contents of the overall framework and each lesson that the users would like to know.In order to study further instructor’s manuals, three acclaimed textbooks were chosen as the objects of observation, they were:Chinese Tutorial, New Practical Chinese Reader, Experiencing Chinese. This paper summarized the similarities and differences of each section, trying to analyze and evaluate them.In addition, in the paper an Interview with the chief editor of Contemporary Tutorial helped to explore the concept and function of instructor’s manuals. The direction of teaching materials writing depends on teaching ideas, and thus different structures and systems are formed. The instructor’s manuals should be a recreation which can assist.teachers in guiding inspiration style manuals and making lesson plans rather than be a data sets.Finally, it put forward some advice to the introduction of cultural items, based on the the results of the statistical data and the survey result, aiming to enrich the theory of compiling Chinese teaching materials and offer some valuable references to the compilation of the instructor’s manuals.
