| Qin dynasty(221B.C-206B.C) is a era of great importance in the history of road construction in ancient China. Zhi Dao, or the Direct Road, is not simply a road, but a project concerning politics, economy, military and relationship between different ethnic groups. Therefore, it has attracted attentions of historians and has been studied extensively. There have also been through field investigations’and archaeological excavations.Zhi Dao is a comprehensive system including not only the road itself but forts and beacon towers, palaces and military stations along the way. The passage of the road is a controversial issue among academicians. According to historic records and the results of previous investigations and excavations, Zhi Dao goes through Chun Hua county, Xun Yi county, Huang Ling county, Fu Xian county, Gan Quan county, Zhi Dan county, An Sai county and Yu Lin municipality and ends in Eldos city in the Inner Mongolia. The traditional theory, however, holds that Zhi Dao should be built after the Eastern Han dynasty(25A.D-220A.D)The construction of Zhi Dao adopted the practice of " cutting mountains and filling valleys", with distinctive affiliated facilities such as forts, beacon towers, palaces and military stations, occupying a prominent position in ancient China’road construction. During previous field investigations, researchers did find many traces of " cutting mountains and filling valleys", but they have never excavated and probed into the exact way of construction. The author, through study, has an initiative understanding of how the road and its affiliated facilities were built. The construction of Zhi Dao started in Qin dynasty and was used intensely in the war as well as peaceful interactions between Han people and Xun Nu (the Hun). Therefore, the function of Zhi Dao was of military in times of wars and of peaceful purposes in times when the two sides were in good terms. |
