Vocabulary is one of the most important components of a language, which will be meaningless without vocabulary. If a language structure were the skeleton of the language, vocabulary would serve as important organs and flesh. Vocabulary learning, which is very important and covers the whole process of language learning, will directly affect learners in using and developing a language. Therefore, effective strategy training is needed for learners to help them master vocabulary learning strategies and promote their independence and autonomy.This study selected 81 vocational school students of the first grade in the first semester as the objects to be tested. The author adopted strategy-based instruction (SBI) in experimental class, which combined explicit strategy training with English classroom. The strategies to be trained included metacognitive, cognitive and social/affective strategies. The analysis of students’ questionnaire, interview, feedback and score in tests indicated that great changes had taken place on the students’ beliefs of vocabulary learning. It also showed that strategy training could raise their awareness to adopting learning strategies and improving their ability in vocabulary learning. But vocabulary strategy training was not so effective in improving students’ English proficiency.This study proved the effectiveness of strategy-based instruction in vocabulary learning. So the author suggested:English teachers should integrate strategy training into teaching plan and conduct it in English classroom. Teachers should also take students’ learning needs and the curriculum content into consideration when designing the training plan. During the training process, teachers should collect the feedback provided by students themselves in different ways and design a variety of activities to help them practice and consolidate the strategies, and the timely evaluation is also necessary.
