In modern China, due to the special national conditions of ourcountry, a lot of foreigners joined in the tide of Chinese learning and research,especially the diplomats in China became a prominent group. Among these, theBritish diplomats Thomas Francis Wade and Herbert Allen Giles are most prominent.From the microcosmic individuals, the paper starting from the Chinese textbooks thatWade and Giles wrote, combined with the social background at that time, explores thecharacteristics of Chinese textbooks. This Paper is divided into five chapters to state:The first chapter: introduction. Mainly introduced of urgency to the study of thehistory and the research status quo of Chinese textbooks in modern China, followedby defining the related concepts of involved in the title, finally points out the sourceof corpus and the research methods.The second chapter: the time background of compiling Chinese textbooks ofBritish diplomats in China. This chapter briefly introduces the modern China’spolitical, economic and cultural status quo, analysis of the social environment at thattime, the necessity of learning Chinese and Chinese textbook. And introduce thegeneral situation of the life and work of Wade and Giles.The third chapter: the analysis of Wade’s Chinese textbooks.
