Henri Dutilleux is a French maestri of the twentieth century contemporary music composer, who has remarkable talent, and seeks perfection in the creation, each published piece is crafted masterpiece. In his music, the theme is not mechanically repeated, but through a variety of deformation to lead the progress of music become more alive. Moreover, his works are often with a strong poetic expression and with a profound cultural connotation, while theirs uniqueness is recognized and appreciated by concert-goers and music practitioners around the world. This thesis is based on composer’s Violin Concerto L’Arbre des songes as the research object, through the symbolism inherent in the work’s title Tree and Dream to carry three different directions of association and to further analyze the ‘label’ theory progressive growth of Henri Dutilleux. I also summarize the logic phenomenon between pitch structure and pan-tonality, while digging out the deep structural texture during the whole work to understand the composer’s art thinking and creative aesthetics. This thesis can be divided into three parts: The first part is an introduction, describing the reason why I select this topic and stating research methods I have chosen. The second part is the main body of the thesis which divides into four chapters. Chapter I states the life of Henri Dutilleux and style of his music. In Chapter II, the first association connected the morphology of the tree with the melodic contour and rhythm contour to explore the symbolism in composition. Chapter III examines the evolution mechanism of motif throughout the whole piece, and put the ability of discontinuity about time linked with dream-like processing compositional techniques. During Chapter IV, the third association is with the deep structure and I then write about the formal function of pivot-pitches and recurring carillon music to obtain the structural texture of this piece. Finally, the conclusion, it contains summary about the Dutilleux’s creative and stylistic techniques and I would put forward opinions about that.
