Henri Dutilleux is a French veteran composer who enjoys the world-class reputation. He is very talented and each published works was masterpiece of uncompromising attention to detail. His works are rich in well-established techniques of modern music as well as a deep humanistic connotation, worth hearing a hundred times with the "reward of resistance". Therefore, his works are popular all over the world, especially appreciated by those who prefer classic music more than modern music.In this paper, the only piece of a Cello Concerto - "the distant world" is studied as the research object. We are trying to sum up how the composer to control the pitch of music by closely using composer logic and how to reflect the corresponding culture through the pitch design.There are three parts in the article: Introduction The first part is to introduce the topics of the reason, the life and works of Dutilleux. The second part is the main part of this paper, which is divided into four chapters. First three chapters discuss how the three central pitch materials played the central roles in the whole works. The fourth chapter deals with the literary sources of music, mainly related to some of Baudelaire and Proust Dutilleux cultural values for the effects of music. The last part comes to the conclusion, summing up the concept of Dutilleux's music.
