Kunqu named as a “typical human oral and intangible cultural heritage “ and praised as a living fossil has a history of 600 years so far, and is one the of the oldest operas. Kunqu is blessed with mild melancholic singing and dancing. A Train in the Station made by Lumiale brothers in 1895 and Ding Jun Shan made by Xinpei Tan from Fengtai photo studio in 1905 represented the natural blending of Movies and Operas, creating a opera-movie with Chinese characteristics.Opera master Mei Lanfang had made great contribution to the combination of the two.As a result, Kunqu not only being recorded and sung but also being remembered as a classic art form by the following generations.Since then, some directors gradually started to try making Kunqu movies, some of which had been recognized as classic despite of the limited amount. What’s more, Kunqu fans are still trying to make Kunqu movies nowadays.This book focuses its discussion on the creation and development of Kunqu. By exploring and analyzing the background, the visual and audio language and the impact of several classical Kunqu movies, namely Shi Wu Guan, You Yuan Jing Meng, Qian Tou Ma Shang and A Dream in Red Mansions, It goes over the current Kunqu movies development and reflects its losses and gains.
